Woman Pleads Guilty in Nursing Home Identity Theft Case

Healthcare Compliance Perspective:

Healthcare providers must continuously remind themselves of the vulnerability of the population they serve and protect them against abuse, including confidentiality breaches involving financial protected health information.

A 40-year-old Queens woman pleaded guilty this week to making unauthorized purchases on the credit cards belonging to three elderly dementia patients at a New York nursing home. The woman was arrested last October and charged this past March by the New York State Attorney General and faces up to four years in state prison.

Investigators tracked the purchases to the woman who received the resident’s personal information from an unidentified friend who worked at the nursing home. She made $11,000 in purchases on the cards, including iPads and designer handbags.
